That's what building up tension feels like. Minutes or hours of rising tension, the room knowing something is coming, the anticipation tightening until it hurts. Then the drop. What makes the drop hit isn't the drop itself, it's everything before it.
Most founders skip the buildup. They want to be at the drop. AI lets you ship in a weekend, post the screenshot, take the instant win. I've done it. I'll do it again next month. The work I'm proudest of, though, isn't the things I shipped fast. It's the things I sat with long enough to understand before I built them.
The buildup is the part where you don't yet know if the idea is good. You're working in the dark, and the tension is real because you can't see the drop yet. You don't know if anyone will care. Some days you don't even know if you care. That tension is exactly what most people are trying to skip. AI lets them. Cursor will write working code in twenty minutes for an idea you haven't thought through, and Claude will outline a launch plan for a product you couldn't defend over coffee with a real customer. The execution layer has collapsed. The judgment layer hasn't.
The audience can tell. Always. They can tell whether you sat in the tension or skipped to the moment. They can tell from the website, from the launch post, from the way you talk about the thing two months in when the novelty is gone. Some builders can get to a successful drop faster than others, but you always have to create the right buildup first.
